What is Garlic Powder?

Garlic-Powder

Garlic powder is basically a powdered version of this spice item. Fresh garlic cloves can add incredible aroma and flavor to dishes, but have a very pungent odor.

There are many people that are unable to stand this pungent smell, but would still love to enjoy the flavor and aroma of this spice item. Garlic powder is their best option as it allows them to enjoy the flavor without having to deal with the smell.

The preparation of garlic powder involves drying the garlic cloves and then grinding them using grinder until they transform into a fine powder. This powder can then be added in any dishes for seasoning.

However, certain recipes and dishes that require the use of only fresh garlic cloves, and would not taste well with the use of garlic powder. Many people also feel that garlic powder tend to lose its aroma as they become older.

Hence, the powdered version of garlic should only be used for seasoning and sprinkling on dishes in the form of a condiment. In dishes that require a strong aroma or flavor, it is best to use fresh cloves of garlic.

What is Garlic Salt?

Garlic-Salt

Garlic salt is prepared by mixing one part of garlic powder and three parts of common table salt together. This mixture of garlic salt is hugely popular for adding flavor and aroma to pizzas, garlic breads and other such food items.

During the preparation process, it is important to use some kind of anti-caking substance to ensure that the salt articles do not stick to the garlic very strongly. This could largely alter the preparation of the garlic salt.

This salt acts quite similar to table salt, but only adds that extra flavor and aroma of garlic to the food items and dishes. However, this salt can only be used as a flavoring agent and for seasoning. This cannot be used extensively for preparing dishes and recipes as they do not offer the aroma and flavor of garlic as much as fresh garlic cloves or even garlic powder.

So, How is Difference Between Garlic Salt and Garlic Powder?

These two variants of garlic seasonings are different from each other on a number of characteristics. These differences have been discussed below with respect to each different aspect.

Differences based on flavor

Garlic powder is simply a mellowed version of garlic, and offers similar aroma and flavor to that of garlic cloves. It is simply the intensity that is reduced slightly. On the other hand, Garlic salt is more like salt with the taste and smell of garlic.

Hence, Garlic powder is used to add taste and aroma similar to pure garlic to dishes and food items. Garlic salt, on the other hand, is simply a variant of salt to be added to dishes, but with a slightly different flavor to regular table salt.

Differences based on health effects

One of the major differences between these two variants of garlic substances is the fact that Garlic Salt involves salt whereas Garlic Powder does not. Salt has often been found to be the root cause of a number of health issues among humans.

Increased salt consumption can lead to an increase in the pressure of blood flow in the body. This, in turn, increases the chances of strokes or other such heart-related diseases.

There are a number of other health risks associated with salt. Since Garlic Powder does not have any salt in it, it is deemed to be the healthier choice between these two variants.

Differences based on the versatility of their use in place of each other

Since both these items include Garlic as a primary ingredient, can they be used in place of each other? Well, Garlic Powder is greatly versatile in this aspect as it can be used quite easily in place of Garlic Salt.

All you need to do is determine the intensity of the aroma and flavor of garlic that you need. Accordingly, you add the powdered garlic top the dishes and then add salt to taste.

However, you do not have the same luxury with garlic salt. Since the powder itself consists of salt along with garlic, you cannot increase one component of the powder without increasing the other component. Hence, if you want to increase the intensity of the aroma or flavor of the garlic in the dish, you cannot add more of the powder without the risk of making it increasingly salty.

Similarly, you cannot increase the salty taste of the dish by adding more of the salt without increasing the aroma and flavor of garlic in the dish. Hence, you can use Garlic powder with normal table salt in place of Garlic salt, but you cannot use the latter in place of the former.

There are a number of other such basic differences between garlic salt and garlic powder. Moreover, there are certain recipes that allow you the luxury to switch between the two as per your desire, while there are others that require you to strictly adhere to a particular variant of garlic. You need to determine the ingredients based on the taste and aroma that you would like your food item to have.
